When hiring a car in Spain will a full UK driving licence suffice or do I need an international licence?

As the others have said, full UK licence is ok. If it helps any, I found quite a handy guide to Spanish driving laws here http://www.andaluciarentals.co.uk/Travel%20Info%20Rules%20of%20the%20Road%20Spain.htm

photo licence is fine.... but international one is not expencive.... you can pick them up at most main postoffice's... only about £8...
all you need is your uk one and a passport photo... all info on international driving licence's is avalible on the aa's web site

Full uk is fine, check with your insurer though about having a green card, I used to work in insurance and for spain you had to have a green card issued by your insurer.

This may have changed nowadays, but its worth checking as we had a lot of people who didnt have a green card and were not actually covered when they had an accident.

Also check with your insurer if they cover costs of bringing car home if anything happenend and it was undriveable.

Nothing worse than having to fork out £200 just to get your car back home.

uk one will do .........but why the hell do you want to drive in spain

Just had to say that driving is a great way to see Spain and the person who said otherwise doesn't know what they are talking about. Such a beautiful country and with a car you can get off the beaten track and really see the country. PS I'm from US not UK so you will have to get used to driving on "the other side of the road" makes it a little harder, when I drove in the UK I had the feeling the cars coming at me were going to hit me, but you get used to that. You do have to totlaly change your mind set.

All countries in the EEC accept/respect the drivers licenses of the other member countries.
You will have no problem...
but DO NOT FORGET to take your full license with you on your trip to Spain... (My son forgot to bring his on a visit a couple of years ago, and I ended up serving as his private taxi!)

tommy
your UK license should have an EU logo on it which means you are fine for any EU country.

Picture license will suffice, I live here and can still drive on my UK license, but as has been said, don't forget the paper part as well.

Fred Flintstone
A full UK licence will do, just remember to take the paper part as well as the plastic card part.

PotBoy
UK driving license is suffice

loadsatiggers
Valid uk paper licence is all thats required. Take your plastic photo too if you want but its not needed

uk license is fine, we hired one at the airport. just make sure you write a list of things wrong with the car and get it signed by a rep before you leave the car park. They are quick to try and blame you for any damage on the car.

?
Full UKllicence but it is always good to check withthe car hire firm.

Take which ever is easier to get or replace. Generally International licenses are very easy and quick to get and are valid in almost every country in the world. Many countries will confiscate you license for even minor traffic violations, So if you are pull over give them the one that will cause you the least drama to replace

We just got back from Spain and my husband just took with him his UK licence and that was fine. I agree though make sure you carefully check the car over before you leave the airport and get them to write down any marks or dents etc. Also see how much petrol they have provided you with and get them to write that down as well. On pick up our tank was only 3/4 full and when we returned it with the same amount they tried to charge us for a full one. Just something to remember, but other than that you should be fine driving in Spain as long as you keep your wits about you.
