see your question is flawed. spain and tacky go together!

dinodino
San Sebastian, Basque Country North Coast. Belle Epoque Acrhitecture, some of the best restaurants in Spain. The opposite of tacky. Mostly Spanish and Continentals.

As you can see by the answers, not well known with the Brits.

Nerja is OK, mostly retirees.

I know a lot of people are suggesting the Med. but why don't you try out the Costa Del Luz. Check out Rota in Cadiz and look up the Hotel Playa de la Luz there. You might be surprised. You won't find any ex Pats performing like idiots there and it is not tacky in any way. You fly to Jerez to get there.

There are more some more hotels in Rota, but you should also check out the hotels in Chipiona,Conil & Chiclana( all by the sea.)

Puerto Santa Maria has some lovely hotels so do check it out before you dismiss it.
You should also check out hotels in Tarifa,Caños de la Meca and Barbate.

I live in Spain and a couple of years ago we went to Asturias. it's a really beautiful place with lots of little coves and villages. Galicia is also very nice and well worth a visit. This year we're off to Menorca as it's quieter than it's neighbours Ibiza and Malloca. Somebody mentioned going to Cabo de Gata, we've been there a few times and the place is really nice and is a natural park. However if I had to recommend one place it would be Asturias.

SUE
My first thought was to go along with nuajav, Costa de la Luz is very pretty. Also Nerja, I understand, is really nice, much nicer than much of the rest of the Costa del Sol. Someone else mentioned San Sebastián, on the Northern coast, and I had a friend who spent some time in Santander and was completely enchanted.

I understand that the entire Northern coast is much nicer, quieter, less touristy, and very classy. (That's one of my next trips...Northern Spain).

Nerja. Its gorgeous.

Im going there on the 24th, its very mature. There are no clubs or no late night music. Just food, the beach and the sun.

Mallorca, Cala d'or, lots of lovely restaurants, lovely cove beaches, and you can travel around easy, most of Mallorca is very nice.

Try Puerto Banuse near Marbella.

not in many places

sorry but Spain screams cheap mass of tourists and tackyness

their beaches are infested with drunk loud low class tourists from northern europe

and spaniard cities like barcelona seem like you're in some sort of plastic land filled with arrogant people

sorry but I didnt like spain much

also benidorm etc, sucks

benidorm is filled with brick buildings housing people everywhere, not a lot of nature there

Jerry
Villaricos in Almeria province is great.

dubie
Puerto Banus and Benidorm are probably the tackiest places in Spain!!
Strip joints and English caffs are not exactly what I would call nice and classy.....
I would try the Northern Costa Blanca. Somewhere like Altea is nice. There is a nice old town on the mountain with sea views and cobbled streets and a lovely coast line. You could also try the Balearics. Mallorca is pretty wealthy and classy and has fantastic beaches and, believe it or not, Ibiza has a great vibe about it and awesome beaches, as long as you avoid San Antonio which is where all the pissed English go.

I'm Spanish, and I think "Las Islas Canarias" or Ibiza are good places. Tarifa (AndalucĂa) if you like surfing.

Benidorm, Alicante, Barcelona.
I live near a beach in Valencia called Puzol (Puçol) and it's really good.

Good luck.

If you want classy, then you should avoid most of the coast on the mainland and especially places like Benidorm, all of the Costa Blanca and I would avoid the Costa del Sol sol also as this is full of tourists and tacky tourist attractions.

If you want somewhere that is quieter, more relaxed and with nicer scenery, then opt for one of the islands:

Menorca: here you will find beautiful coves of blue water and nice spanish style towns. The island has some of the best beaches in Spain

Formentera: A very small island in the Balaerics with stunning beaches and without the huge number of tourists you will find on mainland spain. Again the water here is the cleanest in spain.

If you want something subtropical and a bit different and with stunning scenery, then try "Palma" island - one of the canary islands that is full of natural beauty...you will find banana plantations and mountains covered in ancient wild forests as well as nice colurful villages.

If it's definately mainland Spain you want, then I would recommend any of the following

Costa de Luz - this is the coast between cadiz and portugal and it has nice beaches by the atlantic and less tourists

or

Cabo de Gata - This the coast just north of Almeria and is a protected area. It looks very african and is dry but has some nice beaches and villages

Hope that helps. Greetings from Spain!

Torre del Mar, the beach resort of Velez-Málaga, less than an hour from Málaga airport, but not British like the western Costa del Sol, or Nerja. Beware that the population quadruples in summer with Spanish holidaymakers!
