La Costa de la Luz has the most beautiful , huge golden beaches.

You don't mention the ages of your children. However, the good news is...you have some of the best beaches (I think) ...in Spain and you're not far (by car) from some great places to visit.

You can visit Cadiz, Tarifa, Algeciras, Jerez, Seville, puerta santa maria,Gibralter, Isla Christina, the Donana national park is also in the area.

If you base yourself in this area you're approx 2 hours from Malaga city (& airport) Jerez, Seville and Gibralter have flights to and from the UK too.

We love it there.

As other people have mentioned, Galicia is a great place to explore. The beaches are amazing, really green and varied countryside and not at all like the Spain most people think of. We moved here about 3 years ago and the people are fantastic and also the food. The best seafood in Spain. This is the area where the Spanish come for their holidays, so that has to say a lot for the area. Pontevedra, Santiago de Compostela are wonderful places to visit with fantastic architecture etc. Cheap flights are available into Santiago or even Porto in Portugal, which is not far away from Ryanair. Children are welcomed everywhere and no one around this part of Spain have experienced the ´Brits abroad´ type of holiday maker so making your holiday so much more enjoyable!

If you want green and rugged coast , i recommend that u visit, Asturias, Cantabria or Galicia. they have the most beautiful coast line and aren´t as popular destinations as in southern Spain or the canary Island.. ( even though they have great places too, but u said not commercial right)... anyway i would recommend going during the summer time since it tends to be warm but not blazing hot like in other parts of Spain...
Wherever u choose , have a great time..

Happy New year...

If you want good weather at this time of the year, you need to head as far South as you can.
The Costa del Sol is very commercial, the Costa de Almeria and Calida, whilst offering good weather (lots of sun, rare rain), don't offer green coasts (due to the lack of rain).
The Costa Blanca is quite commercial, though if you go to some parts of the Northern Costa Blanca, you find some wonderful coast lines as well as facilities for children. Try Javea, Altea, Vila Joyosa.
Galicia has the greenest, most rugged coast line of all but the weather is more like Scotland's than Spain's.
In fact, believe it or not, I would choose Ibiza in your shoes.
If you head to some villages in the North or East of the island like Santa Eulalia, you will find that it is not at all commercial, you have a myriad of coves and different coast lines around you, you can go to a different beach every day and there are great things to do with children like visiting caves and hippy markets or hiring little motor boats.
The weather, as it is an island, is probably a little windy at this time of year though?....
Hope this helps

I would agree with another person that anwered that the Costa de la Luz is a great place to visit. We have visited the La Barrosa area a lot of times, it has fantastic beaches (8km long) which are great for treasure hunting with the kiddies and have fab rock pools in the natural part of the beach with our children love. The locals are also really lovely and adore children so no need to worry about taking them to restaurants etc as you are always welcome.

The weather in this area is also fab as you get the breeze from the Atlantic which cools the temperature in the Summer so it is not too hot for kiddies.

There are also some great walks down to the beaches through pine forests and some great villages and cities to visit if you can drag yourself (or the kids) away from the beach :-)

A green rugged coast you´ll find that in the Province of Galicia. It has all of that and beautiful beaches as well.
I live in Málaga and have just had Xmas on the Costa de la Luz but for rugged green scenery it must be Galicia.
