If you have a bank account that has international offices you will get the best rate just by using your ATM card. I can't say which bank I use but I get no ATM fees and the exchange rate it less that the 1% Visa rate that Visa offers. I travel in my job so this is very important to me and I have tried every system that I can find. Check out MSN Money's list of top ten banks and you can figure it out from there. Not only is just using your ATM card safer but it is the cheapest route to go. |

Any bank, here or there, will give you the current rate + charge a small fee.
You want to avoid currency exchange shops in Europe. They will give you the current rate + charge a LARGE fee. |

Your bank would be the best place. If you are exchanging a large amount, some banks require you tell them like a week before you go & they usually charge a small fee (like 3% or so). The airport has places & some tourist stand when you get there will exchange too, but they will probably charge like 10%!
The best thing would to use your credit cards. They will exchange your money & if you loose it, you can cancel your card instead of being mad for loosing your money! Maybe half cash & half credit card? |

Don't bring any money. Use ATM's. Best and easiest as the guy before me said. |

Do a web search to get an idea of the exchange rate. Then check with "American Express" and AAA. My Credit Union gave me a good rate when I bought travelers checks in Euros.
I got a lousy rate at the airport.
I got a decent rate by using ATMs in Amsterdam against my credit card. I am told by experienced travelers that the ATM route is probably the best. Depending on where you live, some banks will do currency exchange. The prefer that you have an account with them .I found the bank rates to To be better than the airport, but not as good as my credit union. Most important, look up the rate on the web so you know if you are getting a good rate or a bad rate. Be aware that the "official" rate is for the folks in alligator shoes who are moving hundreds of thousand of euros at a clip. Enjoy your Trip. |

There is one answer for you on here that is already correct in my experience. Use ATM's and don't fool with money changers.
I use NetBank and their ATM program. It is the easiest and cheapest. They do not charge any ATM fees and the exchange rate is closer to .05% which is half of the one percent that Visa charges. This system will save you 3-4% over any bank, hotel, or embassy. (note that most embassies do not exchange money) I would say none do but I haven't been to every single embassy.
Anyway if you really want the cheapest rate and easiest way this is what I have found after being outside the US for 4 years now, residing here and paying all my bills. |
