It depends on what kind of house you want and where you want to be.
Do you want an old house to do up, a modern or off plan, a townhouse, villa or apartment
Do you want to be in the countryside or on the coast.
Need to be near the airport, hospital, schools etc.
Do you drive or have to rely on public transport and will it suit your needs.
Do you need to work and if so can you get work locally, or are you planing to retire
Is the house for permanent living or do you want to rent it out for part of the year.
Once you have answered these questions and many more then take a look at your budget, and whatever you do don't stray from it.
Buying a house in Spain is totally different than in the UK. You will need to add on approx 11% to the asking price to cover the purchasing costs.
Whenever you can, go on recommendations.
Go on holiday and speak to the locals as much as possible

I live slightly inland from Fuengirola and know countless towns and villages first hand, email me if you need any more info |

Anywhere where there are no Brits! Sorry but we are overrun with them and prices and conditions have soared and things depreciated since our arrival en mass. If you want good quality service, honest estate agents, builders, and town halls then don't come to the Costa, it's rife with con men of every nationality. Trying to earn an honest living here is impossible now, even mayors are in jail for corruption!
Go somewhere inland where you will still get treated with decency and enjoy the lovely Spanish people and their way of life in this beautiful country.
I have lived here 15 years, am an estate agent and live on the coast, and about to move. |

I'd steer clear of coastal towns-they are all in danger of being overrun with tourists/lager louts. If you want somewhere nice then go inland to one of the small towns that aren't on the main drags. |

North East, one can still make a fast buck in Cambrils and Vilanova i la Geltru. 1st and second line (from the sea) flats are available. But it is cold in winter.
South, . Look at Cadiz province; Sanlucar, Chipiona, Rota. Unless you know the system, avoid Chiclana as many homes are illegal.
The city of Cadiz is horrible.
Use a registered estate agent (API) and a lawyer. |

Spain is many countries all rolled into one therefore the culture in Spain is very varied and interesting so it depends on what you are looking for see http://www.spain4uk.co.uk/Spain_culture.htm for more details |

There's no best place in Spain, but best place for you to buy a properry abroad would be elsewhere! Better deals to be had in the new EU countries for starters! |

Certainly not in the very nice little town of Albox in Almeria Province. Although it's a nice, quiet place, 400 Brits have just been told that their £100,000 / £200,000 homes have been built illegally. 8 are to be demolished immediately without compensation. The rest are unsaleable and may also be demolished.
The developers - as is often the case in that part of Spain - will not comment. Many of them are big-time crooks and don't give a s**t. Many of the people sold their homes in the UK and are now ruined.
Spain is a MINEFIELD. It looks and sounds easy and it IS easy to hand over your life savings, but you have been warned! The laws in Spain are weird - they can take your villa for road improvements and give you no compensation. That's the south of the country, particularly Almeria. Think carefully! |
