This is a good travel guide of Barcelona. You can browse in there and see what you want to visit.Barcelona is a very nice and interesting place to visit,I can assure this.
I´m from Barcelona and I´ll never be tired of this amazing city.
As for hotels check the web as well,as there are lots of hotels and prices in Barcelona, and you should see what´s best for you.Hostels are also good.http://www.easytobook.com/en/spain/barcelona/barcelona-hotels/?aff_id=17072304¤cy=GBP
If you like being in the main center, there´s a very well located Hotel, just next to the Ramblas (heart of Barcelona) called Hotel Lleó.I know people that have stayed there and have been very happy.I send you the link so you check it http://www.hotel-lleo.es/

Have a nice time in Barcelona.I´m sure you´ll enjoy it.
Visit: Sagrada Familia,Olimpic zone,Ramblas,Port,Parc Güell,Zoo,Parc Ciutadella, and museums...

Barcelona is a very cosmopolitan and touristic city,so if you can speak a bit of Spanish is always appreciated, but with English people will understand you,as they are used to it (hotels, restaurants etc you´ll find someone that speaks English)
About tips...up to you.Depends on what can you afford. We are not used to give much tips here...

No idea about a hotel. we just rented a flat in barcelona for two weeks.

some places to go:
Beaches (obviously)
Park Guell
Segrada familia
Palau de la musica catalana
Spend some time having a look at the human statues. they're well good

1. Fro Barcelona airport take the city bus, only a couple of euros
2. It drops you off right in the city centre, at the top of Las ramblas. The tourist info office is right beside you.
3. Call in tourist info office and they will give you details of dozens of hotels within 5 minutes walk, ranging from budget to luxury.
4. Pick uo info on where to go from them, there is so much to see, just select what interests you. The staff speak excellent English
5. DO NOT carry a handbag, keep your cash etc in a body belt, or your wallet in the front pocket of your jeans. The tourist areas are alive with beggars and pickpockets.
6 You do not actually need to learn any Spanish for a successful visit, but out of courtesy to the locals, a small tourist phrase book would be handy. You can pick them up second hand from your local charity shop for as little as 10 pence.

Everyone speaks English and lots of the people who work there are English!

Watch out for pick pockets especially in Las Rambles. Don't fall for the bracelet scam where they will tie a bracelet on your gf's wrist and then demand money and it is v diff to take off.

dont go far to expensive and full of prostitutes and drug users and stinks of sewage go to krakow in poland much nicer

A basic phrase book will be fine as most of the spanish speak at least a little english.

We thoroughly enjoyed the zoo, it's quite flat too so the walking's not too strenuous. And we would have loved to go to some museums too but it was only a day trip so we hadn't enough time.

Just be careful about the basic tourist traps; pickpockets, hustlers and people trying to overcharge.

We didn't stay in Barcelona so no tips there, sorry.
