Where to stay in madrid?

I arrive at MADRID airport at 16.30 and leave the following day on a 13.40 flight. Should I go into the centre of Madrid overnight or stay closer to the airport. It would be nice to have an everning in Madrid but I am a bit worried about getting back out to the airport in time for check in. Any info on transport links and hotels to stay in would be appreciated. Thanks.......

Go into Madrid, you'll have a great time, it's only an hour back and forth from the airport. I stayed near the airport once, it's pretty dreary out there and the hotels are really expensive. Madrid is a city not to be missed -- great restaurants, people and nightlife.

The last time I was in Madrid I stayed at the Hotel El Prado, with is a three star not too expensive and right near the Plaza Santa Ana and Puerta Del Sol which is where you want to be -- not fancy rooms around 100 -- 150 Euros. You can also get nice clean rooms for a lot less in Residiencias and Hostals. If you go that route I can recommend the Hostal Residencia Riesco which is right around the corner from the Puerta Del Sol, yet on a pretty quiet street. You could probbaly get a room there for around 50 Euros -- this place has been in th esame family for years, is clean has larger rooms than a lot of Residencis and has a bathroom in every room.

lovely lovely
I just went to Madrid with my family this Christmas vacation. We stayed somewhere that I would not recommend, but for my sister's birthday, we ate at Hotel Urban. It was amazing, kind of modern, but not too much. It was a five star hotel so if you're looking to treat yourself to a nice 1 night stay, I would definitely choose Hotel Urban. I think that it is located in the middle of the city but if i were you I would look it up. Transportation: I think cab would be the best bet. The buses are way too slow.

I think you have time to go and see the centre, from the airport you get the metro (line 8 I think),you have to change twice the line but will not get you more than one hour to arrive to the centre
I don,t know about hotels around the airport, but there,s not too much to see,I think it,s better to go to the centre even if you don,t have too much time.
You can go to see the pl.mayor, the royal palace and the royal theatre (to be honest I don,t find Madrid an amazing beautifull city but again it,s better than stay around the airport).
You,ve got lost of hostels too around the centre for 30e.,even for 20 or 15 if you can,t spend too much money
There,s an area called "Huertas",there are lost of pubs and in some places they make blues and jazz concerts
And I would recomend you to go to a place called "San Ginés",ask to somebody and they,ll tell you where is it,(around the centre too),and have a "chocolate con churros".The most of pubs and this place closes about 2-3 at night.
The next day I think is more than enough if you leave the hostel and get the metro at 10,30 to be on time at the airport
The metro station at the centre is "Sol"
In the airport there,s a conexion with the metro station "Aeropuerto",get that line to "Mar de Cristal",and there you have to change and get the line 4,go to "Goya" and then change again and get the line 2 and go to "Sol"
Looks so long but will not get you more than one hour and it,s cheaper than a taxi (1euro)
Hope I haved helped you with this information
Have a good time!!

Underground goes from Airport straight into centre of Madrid, top night out and plenty to see. Loads of pensionas, same as hotels, about £20 a night.
