Torremolinos in itself is not an especially wonderful place anymore...not like back in the 70's when it was THE place to be on summer hoilidays...
However, the beach areas are very nice and well kept up, both El Bahondillo and La Carihuela have excellent seafood restaurants along the walkway, (called Chiringuitos). (We often meet my husbands family there for an evening meal to celebrate a family event).
Torremolinos is a great center point, like the axle of a spokewheel. From there you can make day trips to many interestng cities, such as Cordoba, Granada, Ronda, Antequera, Gibraltar and Seville. Also you have the local towns along the Costa del Sol worth visiting: Málaga, with places such as the Alcazaba, Gibralfaro, the Picasso Museum, the Cathedral and the main streets, some of which have been converted to pedestrian areas and are fun to wander about on. There are several shopping malls too, if that takes your fancy. Then there is Nerja, east of Malaga with the lovely grottoes. Definitely worth a visit, and go down to Burriana beach and have one of the most delicious paellas at the restaurant of El Ayo.... If you have time, keep heading east (about another half hours drive) to Almuñecar in Granada, lovely beaches and the tapas in that part of Spain are FREE with your drinks! (Worth the extra miles if you aren't too fond of paella).
Then west of Torremolinos you have several places worth seeing: the closest Benalmádena Costa, it has a lovely park near the beach, and the beaches are very nice. Fuengirola, the smallest town on the Costa del Sol has the longest Paseo Maritimo (beach walk/street), with magnificent beaches, great for a drive or a long walk, The Fuengirola port has a nice area with restaurants, (there is a great german restaurant there) And most of the beach restaurants have excellent seafood dishes... look for the one with most people, it will show the one with the best food!). Then you can drive up in the hills to Mijas Pueblo. the touristic town par excellence. It has breathtaking views of all the coast, you can see all the way from the Sierra Nevada to Gibraltar on a sunny day. The local church has been restored and the ceilings are worth a quick visit, takes no more than 10 minutes. The center of town is on several levels as the town itself is on the side if a hill... So you will have some stairs to climb, up or down depending on where you park.(there is a fantastic multilevel garage for parking next to the town hall.) Go there in the morning, as the town hall building is quite beautiful, and it is not open in the afternoons, it only takes a couple of minutes to go in and see the fantastic indoor patios. Another day, drive to Marbella, the center of town is also pedestrian (there are several parking areas) and has some lovely streets to walk through.. Then go on to Puerto Banús, the local pleasure port/yacht harbour. In the summer it is the playground for the rich and famous of Spain and other parts of Europe... Some of the yachts are absolutely magnificent. Don't eat there, the prices are outrageous. Treat yourself to a HaagenDasz ice cream, and walk around the port.
Then there are the fun things.... In Torremolinos and Fuengirola you have water parks (open until october). In Benalmádena you have Selwo Marina, a small acuatic animal park with a parrot show also. And Sea Life Aquarium down in the Benalmádena Port area. Torremolinos also has a Crocodile Park (just behind the Aquapark). And the best to visit is Selwo Safari Park in Estepona, most of the animals are in semi-liberty, beautiful to visit if you enjoy wildlife, or travel with children.
Then, depending on the dates of your trip you might be lucky enough to visit one of the local fairs.... The fairs start in june the first being Feria de San Juan the week of june 24th. (Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel), the last being the one coming up next: Feria de Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Fuengirola from october 6th. thru the 12th.. The main fair is the one in Málaga in August that lasts nearly 2 weeks! (It's the longest and most impressive fair in AndalucÃa, although the Feria de Abril in Seville is more famous).
Another thing, if you feel like going to the cinema, the Miramar shopping mall in Fuengirola has a multicines with several original version films going on. (If you are interested, have your hotel check the timetables for you)
As you can see, Torremolinos is a great place to stay!
You haven't said what hotel you will be at, but Torremolinos has several excellent ones. My favourites are the Cervantes, the Melià (on the beach) and El Griego.... |

Drive to the old Spanish town of Ronda. It will take about an hour.
It is an unspoilt town inland, and high in the hills. Lovely views and a nice day out. |

I used to live in Malaga, which is near Torremolinos. So I recommend you visit Malaga, and a few other main "provincias" in Andalucia. I'd say the most interesting and beautiful ones are Granada, Cadiz ( on the Atlantic Ocean), and maybe Jaen or Almeria. There's lots to do. I'd say, as you are staying in Torremolinos you should do a few walks down the beach, including the walk to Benalmadena, the next town up. And Ronda is also a beautiful little village, absolutely beautiful. But you'd have to look it up on the map.
Buena suerte!
