I live in Andalucia. I needed to go to Málaga city last weekend. I got lost 5 times even though I was using GPS. My system is two years old. What you have to bear in mind in Spain is the amount of new roads there are. Every week somewhere there is a new road. You buy a new GPS system today and immediately it is out of date.

we bought a tomtom 710, just over a year ago, after getting lost in seville several times.
best move we ever made.
always good in the towns and cities (we go to seville, malaga, granada, antequera and lucena quite a lot) but also excellent out in the rural areas between the towns. our only problem is the new motorway they're building up to cordoba - it's such a big project that it's having knock on effect on lots of local roads and the tomtom can't keep up with the changes. (i doubt if the competition could either though!)

one other thing; we always switch the voice to the spanish lady when we're over there - good fun and good practice!

I think Sue is mistaken. GPS works worldwide, it is NOT like cellphones. The most important thing is to get updated maps just prior to your trip. We went last year to Germany with our Garmin, and it worked fine. We had a datacard with the European maps on them, and plugged it in. We had no problems.

So the answer is to find out who has the newest maps.

I would think that all systems will work but it is imperative to ensure your system is up to date.
I live in Portugal and there is so much new road building here that Doris [my sat nav] gets totally confused as she is on a road that to he does not exist. Spain is very similar.
Advice is get a totaly up to date system.

I would say most - so long as they have up to date maps - that's the main thing. I used a Tom Tom around Italy last year and it was great. Garmin are also supposed to be very good.

Personal choice is the Mark 1 Brain and a good map, gets me there every time.

NOT one from the US. You must check to be sure that the system is going to receive while you are in Spain. If you are American, and you are thinking of buying one, while still here, make sure it will pickup the signal there. Just as our cell phones (mostly) don't work in Europe, neither will GPS systems. You may be able to get one with dual reception, but I was told not to bother when I went last year (though technology changes so fast, there may be compatible ones, now). You might just as well rent one with your car.
