You can't do a day trip. Sorry. The train from Barcelona to Madrid take some 5 or 6 hours. I prefer the night train Talgo "coche cama".
You need at least 3 days on each city. I you don't have to much time in your vacation stay in Madrid and visit Toledo or Segovia, this two cities are very beautiful and you can visit them in a day trip. The "Ave" fast train runs from Atocha station to Toledo in less than a hour, but book the tickets in advance. The train to Segovia take 2 hours.
Barcelona is the most cosmopolitan city in Spain and requires a "full" visit. In Barcelona you can find extraordinaire architecture, excellent eating, a variety of hotels for all the budgets, night life, etc. A visit to La Sagrada Familia, Parque Guel, The Olympic City,La Rambla(probably the most famous street in the world), the water front, The Tibidabo historic amusement park(in a mountain overlooking the city), the Barrio Gotico, the Cathedral, and the Museums(Miro and Modern art) shall be in your itinerary.
If you go on Summer you can go to the beach in the city or take a train to the Costa Brava along the north coast.
Enjoy Spain! |

as it's already said, you cannot do a day trip, better go for a weekend. And beside all the nice things already mentioned, do not forget about the night life!!!! It's great but be carefull if you are not used to 'cause we dinner at 22-23 and go out afterwords, during the weekend we coem back home around 6,7 am....but you know, it's great.
and more things, if you have time, do not stay only in Barceona and go to visit another cities close by. for example Tarragona. It's one hour far from Barcelona, trains every 30 minutes and it's a wonderfull city with old arquitecture and romain ruins, very nice views and see just 100 m far from the train station. very very beautiful, I love that city |

well... if you are going to barcelona, and want to see the basic tourist places, i suggest you going to see the sagrada familia (huge gaudi cathedral), go down the paseo de gracia and see the other famous gaudi building, plaza catalunya (central of barcelona plaza), walk down the ramblas to columbus, those are the basi things, but from personal experience, you havent seen barcelona until u've seen barcelona nightlife. Its a tremendouse city full of different cultures and people, for clubs and bars, go to http://www.bcn-nightlife.com/en/ , for tourist places see http://www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com . for daytrip to madrid you would probably have to take a plane, its about an hour in plane. |
