I was told to be careful in Plaza Mayor and along Gran VĂa after dark, especially during high seasons.
Mostly, you want to keep an eye on your valuables. Don´t leave your camera hanging on your back, keep money in seperate places, use a money belt, keep purse tucked under your arm. The biggest problem is pickpockets. So, use ordinary common sense.

Maybe the center and the South of Madrid, in the North the nivel of life is more bigger than the South.

As it was said before the main problem are pickpockets as in any other touristic city. Other than that Madrid is quite a safe city, the 'problematic' areas (usually in suburbs) don't have any interest for the tourists.
