Take a look at these links as they have really good information regarding sun tan lotions
http://dermatology.about.com/cs/skincareproducts/a/spf.htm
http://summer.about.com/od/fashionbeauty/a/sunscreen.htm
I live in Spain and have noticed over the past few years the weather in May is becoming increasingly hotter and would suggest using a high factor cream or lotion initially.
I have also seen many holiday makers with awful sunburn in spite of applying sun tan lotions. This has usually been due to the fact that it hasn't been applied correctly. Please make sure you apply your protection before going to the beach, at least half an hour before as your skin needs time to absorb it.
When you get to the beach top it up immediately and after every swimming session

It depends on your skin type, |

I'm not sure how warm it is, but I would start off with factor 15 - and adjust it to suit - if you get burnt use a higher factor. |

If you are pales skinned, spf30, and don't forget a cream for the face, and sun screen for lips and nose, don't skimp on quality either, buy the best you can. I live here and I used spf 25-30 at the start of the sunny weather, with spf15 for face and lips, and wear a hat! |

Look at the back of the bottle for the uva rating. Thats the one that stops you from getting skin cancer not the spf. You should have no less than uva rating of 3 stars. For the kids it should be 5 stars.
Also you should get a higher spf as we do not apply it as it should be done. It should be a very thick layer we apply.
(watched a programme on this just recently) |

Obviously this is dependant on your skin type but through personal experience i would say nothing less that 25 or 20 to start anb then gradually come down to an 8 or 10. Although not scorching hot hot hot at that time of year you still need to be aware of the suns harmful rays especially with kids and facial skin.
If you are up in the mountains keep to a high factor.
have a great holiday |

Start high and as your skin darkens and gets used to the sun go lower. |
