Your best bet is on foot, there are so many wonderful things to visit (museums, monuments, palaces, churches, and most of the best ones are within walking distance of each other. To shorten it you could go from place to place by metro.
Then on the outskirts of Madrid you have the Palace at Aranjuez, San Lorenzo del Escorial, El Valle de los CaĂdos, the old castle in Manzanares el Real. And then too, you have a lovely zoo in La Casa de Campo park.
I don't know how much time you have, but you will find that after a week, you will still not have seen everything!

5 days and with an open mind!

Combine the trip to Madrid with an excursion to one of the surrounding towns. In 5 days you´ll be able to see 50% of the city and still have the desire to go back.

Visit in either Spring or autumn to avoid the heat and cold.

I would recomend taking time out to plan the trip in advance and if you can manage more than a long weekend also see the south or north of spain in order to see the differences that exist in just one country!

The site below lists must dos as well as how to get around and possible excursions. If you are doing the trip on a budget there are always hostels available in the centre of the city starting at just 20€ a night!

I just visited Madrid for four days and this is what I did: Took the two stores buses and made one complete round to see all the main points, orientate myself and mark the places I would like to visit for sure. I recommend the EL Prado-Thysen-Sofia Museums where you can easily spend one morning/afternoon. After the museums you can easily spend the rest of the day at El Retiro Park, very nice & in the area. Sunday morning at Plaza Mayor and try to squeeze El Rastro which is an outdoor outlet were you can buy from second hand shoes to antiques. Also liked the trip El Escorial & Valle de los Caidos (half a day). Don't miss tapas with wine at Plaza de Santa Ana, nice atmosphere. I covered most of the areas in four days and besides the tour to Escorial and two-stores bus, I did everything by feet. You get a getter feeling of the city/people that way. Also, there were some remodeling work at the Metro and did not want to get confused. If you organized your time you can cover a lot. Good luck and have a good time!!!!!

Use the subway and buses. Make a list of places you want to visit to take profit of your time to the limit!
Enjoy!
