Chinese has the most native speakers, but if you break out the various dialects (Amoy, etc) it drops down. Since written Chinese is the same in all dialects, even those who cannot communicate by spoken word can read each other's thoughts. But Chinese is pretty much limited to China, Taiwan, and Singapore, with some speakers in cities like San Francisco and New York. Geographically, Spanish is the most widespread, and has the most countries where it is the native language, although it is beginning to break up into mutually incomprehensible dialects. In terms of the most widely distributed language where you will find speakers in the most places, English is well ahead. There are certain occupations which require it, such as airplane pilots and air traffic controllers around the world.

Mandarin Chineese is the most commonly spoken first language dialect in the world(672 milion). Followed by Hindi with 400 million speakers across 9 dialects. Spanish is third with 390 million and English is fourth (354 Million). I am not sure the most "widely spoken" but the language that the most people speak is Chinese. English or Spanish might be more widely spoken than Chinese; I am not sure.
