I'd choose Barcelona, although I have not recently been to Madrid. Here's the travelogue we wrote after our visit last winter: http://www.thetravelzine.com/Barcelona2006.htm
Have a great time! |

Both cities have an very vibrant night life. I agree with the person who said that Madrid is more "fun" in the sense that it is more relaxed and the people are freindlier, looser. The Catalans are a little a more ... insular .... anyway that's how they seemed to me.
In Madrid I was mainly around the Puerta de Sol and there were quite a variety of places that were close to each other -- for Tapas, Dinner, Bars, Nightclubs and Discos. The food is very good there also and they fly in fresh seafood from all over Spain. Barcelona felt more spread out to me -- I rode the Metro a lot more there.
Madrid on a Saturday Night is among the peaks of all my trips to Europe (Including BArcelona, Amsterdam, Brussels, London, Glasgow, Rome) The place with no sleep is correct! Also, I am from New York City and I agree with that comment also, seemed more international than Barcelona. So I vote for Madrid, especially if it's your first trip to Spain. |

I've been in both, but for fun and night life, I'll choose Barcelona. |

I know both and I would certainly opt for Barcelona. |

I prefer Barcelona for following reasons :
- Architecture is really good
- Weather is better in Barca (Madrid is the coldest spanish city in winter and the hottest one in summer)
- Good food and esp.good fish since Barca is close to the sea. |

If you want to have fun go definitely to MADRID, ive been in both, and yes Barcelona has see and some modern architecture, but there is not fun at all compare with Madrid.
I can say that the people from Barcelona are a bit rude, not as in other Spanish cities, in Madrid i met some really cool people.
Madrid is the place, for something they say is the NY of Europe!!! The place with no sleep
And to add that, Madrid is not the hottest city in summer thats Seville, and neither the coldest thats Burgos, or might be Leon, up in the north.
Have fun!!! ;) |
