Barcelona all day.

Yes ok it is supposedly not very 'Spanish' blah blah blah but im not buying into all that, Barcelona IS Spanish but its just a little different thats all. Also Barcelona is a smaller city spread over a bigger area, so you dont get the over crowding and packed in feeling that you do with Madrid, PLUS Barcelona is on the coast and by the sea which makes a perfect setting.

Another reason, about 1 hour from Barcelona you have a resort called Salou and they have wonderful beaches there and also have a Waterpark called Aquopolis. A lot of fun! And also 1 hour away is Port Aventura where they have the Universal Studios theme park and the Costa Caribe water park. Barcelona itself has Las Ramblas, La Sagrada Familia and you also have that Cataluna feel that you wont get in places like Madrid and Seville etc. so i would say to you go to Barcelona ive been 4 times and never got tired of it yet ;-)

Barcelona. All 19 of us that spent a semester in Spain together agreed that we liked Barcelona better. I think you need more time in Madrid to find all its attractions. What Barcelona has to offer stands out on an easier level for tourists. All of Gaudi's works, and it being on the water make it worth it too.

Hi i live in zaragoza (spain), 300 km from madrid and 310 km from barcelona hahaha. I've visited both cities but i prefer barcelona. why? because it has beautiful beaches nd monuments.
Madrid is more "spanish" than barcelona, so if u r lookin for spanish culture i recommend u madrid (food, dances...)
Besides i dislike places where there're so many ppl that u can't walk, just like madrid. Madrid is very "centrallist"(everything is there b-cause it's the capital nd the biggest city in spain), the best restaurants, shops...
But i think u should visit both cities using the AVE (the train). You can arrive in 3 hours nd my city is in the middle!!! U can visit us haa. Search them in the web nd decide what u r lookin for.^^ Bye!!!! bon voyage

both are beautiful places. you will have a cultre shock in madrid. you get completely immersed in the amazing scenery and beautiful buildings. i vote madrid

I loved them both! (which is funny, because the first time I went, I didn't especially like either). but if you are only choosiing from the two (I prefer Andalucía, hands down! Lived in Sevilla, and love the region!), you kind of go with what the others have said....Barcelona is more MODERN and COSMOPOLITAN than Madrid, which has a more typically Spanish flavor...the best flamenco dancers go to Madrid, though the most authentic shows are in Andalucía. For bullfights, you're better off in the south, as well, but I woud guess Madrid is better the Barcelona, where I understand it is technically illegal. (I'm not really sure on that one).

If you're into more modern architecture, go to Barcelona...beaches, too. and more modern art. For 17th century architecture - better in Madrid...Gothic, back to Barcelona. Classical art and capital city things, like the center for royalty and history - go to Madrid.

Both cities have world class shopping. Both have tons of really nice people. It's just different. They have very different flavors. It's sort of like asking if you prefer chocolate or strawberry ice cream...(and the ice cream is really good in Barcelona!) It's about preferences.

If at all possible, try seeing both! Decide for yourself.

I guess it depends on what you are looking for and, how old you are. Barcelona is more a party city and frankly, with out the 1992 Olympic Games and Gaudi, it would still be a port hole.
Madrid is the capital, with rich museums like the Reina Sophia, Thyssen, Prado, the Royal Palace, the parcs, great flamenco and even better food. From the cultural point of view, Madrid is much more desirable, Barcelona much more party.

I'm actually a huge Barcelona fan. I lived in Madrid for a while, but really enjoyed my trip to Barcelona. Also, if you don't speak Spanish, Barcelona is probably the better choice. The Spaniards there would prefer English to Spanish anyway. It's a beautiful city. Gaudi has some amazing buildings there, and it's not too expensive to visit. There is also a park in the city that is gorgeous, and a museum of the history of the city that allows you to walk through ancient roman ruins. In my opinion it's a definite must. When you're tired of walking around, the beach right outside of Barcelona is gorgeous and depending on the time of the year, not too crowded.
