The Head of the State is the King.
The current King is Juan Carlos I de BorbÃ³n y BorbÃ³n-Dos Sicilias.

But the King doesn't have any political power in practice.
The political current leader is the President of the Goverment ( like the Prime Minister in other monarchys ), JosÃ© Luis RodrÃguez Zapatero, chosen in elections in 2004 and again in 2008, from the PSOE ( Partido Socialista Obrero EspaÃ±ol / Socialists workers' Spanish Party ), the progresist party here in Spain ( a similar place to the Democrats in the states, but not the same, probably more progresist the Spanish one (but they are capitalists, not real socialism/communism) ).

Article 1.3. of the Spanish Constitution of 1978 lays down that "the political form of the Spanish State is that of a Parliamentary Monarchy".[1]

Art. 56 of the Spanish Constitution of 1978 lays down that:

* 1. The King is the Head of State and Supreme Commander in Chief of the armed forces, the symbol of its unity and permanence. He arbitrates and moderates the regular working of the institutions, assumes the highest representation of the Spanish State in international relations, especially with those nations belonging to the same historic community, and performs the functions expressly conferred on him by the Constitution and the law.

* 2. His title is King of Spain, and he may use the other titles appertaining to the Crown.

Zapatero is the leader they won only because the last goverment blamed the Madrid train bombings on ETA a FREEDOM group trying to create a seprate state in North Spain, when really it was Al-Qieda... many people like JosÃ© Zapatero now & he has helped improve the country with Same Sex Marrage along with many other contrversial poloices

the King is King Carlos I, he is the first king since the transition to demorocy, he is well like be all people of Spain - More so since the "por quÃ© no tÃ© callasÂ¿" he told Chavez of Venezula Â´WHY DON'T YOU JUST SHUT UP!" because of how HE was talking about the Spanish Goverment before Zapatero- the inicdent took Spain & All Latin American countrys by storm as he is a King who will stand up for his country... even if he did get told off !
