San FermÃn, is not the patron of Pamplona. The patron is San Cernin. (celebrated 29 november)
"San Fermin" is celebrated in Pamplona because he was born in this town in 272 .He died in Amiens (France) in 303, where he is patron as well.
Fermin is said to have been the son of a Roman of senatorial rank in Pamplona in the 3rd century, who was converted to Christianity by Saint Honestus, a disciple of Saint Saturninus. According to tradition, he was baptised by Saturninus (in Navarra San Cernin)
Saturninus (in France "Saint Saturnin") was the first bishop of Toulouse, where he was sent during the "consulate of Decius and Gratus" (AD 250). He was martyred (traditionally in 257 AD), significantly by being tied to a bull by his feet and dragged to his death, a martyrdom that is sometimes transferred to Fermin and relocated at Pamplona.
When certain relics of the saint were brought back to Pamplona in 1196, the city decided to mark the occasion with an annual event. Over the centuries, the saint's festival, the ancient annual fair and the running of the bulls and subsequent bullfights have all melded together.
Before the fiesta of San FermÃn was in september, but later replaced to july ( 7th day of the 7th month) because the weather is better in july. In september there is the fiesta of "San FermÃn Chiquito". in english: "Little Saint Fermin " |

The Sanfermines in the medieval period was a commercial fair and secular fiesta, using for that the dates of religious festivals and using dates of festivals much older such as those of the Basques and Romans. Beginning in the 14th century people concluded certain commercial affairs after the eve of the Feast of Saint John the Baptist, 23-24 June, coinciding with the beginning of summer. Because at these commercial festivals cattle merchants came into town with their animals, eventually bullfighting (corridas) came to be organized as a part of the tradition. Thus was born, sometime probably at the end of the sixteenth century, the genuine first Sanfermines.
Archives document the bull runnings only as far back as the late thirteenth century, but even if one does not know that the bull is a sacred animal in the Mediterranean world, or is unaware of the bull-dancers in Minoan frescoes, an unprejudiced outsider still may detect the remnants of an ancient pre-Christian ritual. At Pamplona, Saint Fermin – who was actually martyred at Amiens – is now sometimes said to have met his end by being dragged through the streets of Pamplona by bulls, a fate also attributed to his mentor, Saint Saturnin of Toulouse. Up to the fifteenth century, the festival was held on Saint Fermin's feast day, 25 September. The Pamplona fiesta was transferred to July in 1592.
Nowadays is celebrated every year:
The festival of San FermÃn in the city of Pamplona (Navarre, Spain), is a deeply-rooted celebration held annually from noon 6 July, when the opening of the fiesta is marked by setting off the pyrotechnic chupinazo accompanied by music,[1] to midnight 14 July, with the singing of the Pobre de MÃ. While its most famous event is the encierro, the running of the bulls, the biggest day is 7 July, when thousands of people accompany the effigy of Saint Fermin along the streets of Pamplona, along with dancers and street entertainers, such as carnival giants and the week-long celebration involves many other traditional and folkloric events. It is known locally as Sanfermines and is held in honor of Saint Fermin, the co-patron of Navarra. Its events were central to the plot of The Sun Also Rises, by Ernest Hemingway, which brought it to the general attention of English-speaking people. It has become probably the most internationally renowned fiesta in Spain.

Fermin is a Saint and the day of Saint (San in Spanish) Fermin is celebrated in July in Pamplona.
The running with the bulls thing is done in many villages during the "fiestas" but Pamplona's San Fermines have become over the years the most famous location for these. |

Saint day. Every place in Spain has a patron saint. Pamplona's patron saint is San FermÃn. His day happens to fall on July 7.
All cities in Spain have a fiesta or a feria of some sort. this is Pamplona's.
For more history, simply search Pamplona and San FermÃn, and the Running of the Bulls.
You should find out all sorts of information that way, including how RIDICULOUSLY expensive lodging is in town for the fiesta. |
