It's not...

that is the name in Latin for the WHOLE of the Iberia... Now Portugal, Spain, Andorra, Gibraltar & some of France...

Iberia is the "greek" name for this same piece of land - I'm not sure if it still is.

Hispania is almost NEVER used... (in Castellano, I don't know about Portuguese?)

The landmass we call Iberia

edit.
The Greek name

The English word Iberia was adapted from the use of the Ancient Greek word Ἱβηρία (Ibēría)

The name Spain (España in Spanish) was derived from the ancient Roman name for Iberia, Hispania. Iberia is the name of the Peninsula where Spain and Portugal are located.

So to answer your question, when the Romans conquered what is today Spain and Portugal they called the "region" Hispania.

FYI - From Hispania you get words like Hispanic.

Hispania was the name that romans gave to iberian peninsula.
it was just a province that belonged to Roman Empire.

Hispania is Latin. It was the LATIN name for the colony that became Spain.

Put this together...Hispania (Latin) España (Spanish) Spagna (Italian) L'Espagne (French) Spain (English)

See any connections?

(and, for the guy who posted before me - Iberia is ALSO Latin, NOT Greek, for the area around the EBRO river)
