Hi!i'm spanish. Places to see:

Puerta del Sol (spanish celebrate the 31st december there)
Football stadiums
Retiro park
Real Palace
Spain square
Derbhod egyptian temple...
u can visit them in 4 hours using the subway

Plaza Mayor. El Prado and Reina Sophia Musuems -- but these are both huge so you might want to focus on the highlights, like Velasquez (Las Meninas not to be missed) and Goya at Prado and Dali and Picasso at Sophia -- Picasso's Guernica is there and is a must see as far as I am concerned. Also, the tapas bars around Plaza de Santa Ana.

Pimplans is giving you an interesting list...not exactly must sees, and I don't think you can really do that in 4 hours, but some of that is really good.

At Puerta del Sol, go to the opposite end of the Plaza from the TĂo Pepe sign. (honest, it's a landmark...it's been there since, like, electricity, maybe even before) stand with your back to the sign, and you're looking at one of the best ConfiterĂas around. Go in and have coffee and some sweets. (try the Trufas de chocolate if you're a serious chocolate freak. They are excellent!)

You MUST go to the Prado museum if you have the time. If you walk, from Puerta del Sol, you will go up Gran VĂa, past some of the most attractive 18th century buildings, many of them quite famous, turn at the Fuente de CĂbeles, and go down the Paseo del Prado to the museum...most celebrated art museum in Spain, and considered second only to the Louvre (although other countries might say the same of their own). All the famous Spanish artists (before the 20th Century) are represented. Lots from other countries, as well.

Continue up the Paseo del Prado to the Puerta de Alcalá, then walk through the Retiro Park, which used to be part of the Royal Palace complex, and only open to Royalty, now to the public.

Yeah I would agree the best places would be Sol, Puerta Alcala,Plaza Mayor, Gran Via, they are all close by so that will give you plenty of time to stroll around.
