Working in Majorca- What to expect? Wages, Accommodation, life? |
Hello! Hope you can all help me out..
I have a few questions about working in Majorca if not specifically Cala Dor..
For Bar/Restaurant I believe the wage is roughly €40 a shift is this true?
How long would a shift be? Would you work 7days a week? What tips/bonus would be expected if any?
How much would rent be with utilities included or extra normally?
If you were hired as a musician say for 2 hours a night and maybe an hour during the day how much would you expect to be paid?
Lots of questions I know but even if you can only answer one that would be great any tips for working in bars/managing would be greatly appreciated... Even if its just advice and no answers that's fine!

I've never worked in bars but I can believe that you would have been offered 40€ per shift. Its a low wage (obviously) but you would be expected to top it up with tips, but as has been answered already tips may be thin on the ground in the current financial climate. You should bear in mind that although it is customary for the Spanish to tip waiters, you may not be serving many Spanish customers...
Lets say you work 6 shifts a week (I would refuse to work 7 days anyway), thats 240€, plus tips at 2%, thats roughly 1000€ per month. I don't know if you'd be paying IRPF (income tax) but I expect not if its temporary and unofficial work. Its not a terrible wage for casual work, but you will work hard for it.
I know a few musicians who try to get hired in bars and they struggle, most bar owners offer drinks instead of cash, but you may get a meal out of it which would keep your living costs down !
To get a room with bills paid in Madrid you'd be looking at 350 - 400€ per month in a normal area (much more in desireable areas), and that should be cheaper in Mallorca so I imagine you'd probably survive, and have a good time.
By the way, you need to be 18 to but drink and cigarettes, and its illegal to drink in the street, you can smoke pretty much anywhere though ! |

There are over 3 million unemployed all over Spain. That figure this year may rise to 4 million. The Spanish will take any temporary job they can to make ends meet. I would suggest now is not the time to be thinking of it. Apart from anything else, there is no absolute guarantee there will be as many tourists this coming year.
