depends what kinds of places you like to go to more.
Madrid, being the capital, has all the things you would expect in a capital...It's a very cosmopolitan city, with its core having been built between the 15th and 18th centuries.
Must sees include the Prado, whether or not you care for art museums, and the Reina SofĂa, and Thyssen - Bournemisza for those who are interested in Art. The Reina SofĂa concentrates on 20th century art, with Guernica as its centerpiece, the Thyssen - Bournemiszan spanning several centuries.
Plaza Mayor, the Rastro if you're there on a Sunday, Palacio Real, and Retiro Park. Tons of fountains and sculptures and puertas that you should go to. Great shopping, but I can't tell you where....someone else will surely post that.
Tons of smaller museums for every taste: armor, tapestries, costumes, decorative arts, customs, and on....
Side trips should include Segovia and Toledo, Ăvila, Rioja wine country, castle tours, Quixote tours are also good places to go.
Barcelona is both older and more modern than Madrid. The oldest part of the city traces its roots to Roman times (and likely before). In the BarrĂ Gotic, (gothic Quarter) there are no shortage of places where the owners have excavated to the Roman ruins below, and have opened (for a fee) to the public to see them. The newer part of the city, the Eixample, is a treasure-trove of Modernista architecture, including most of GaudĂ's most famous buildings: La Pedrera, Casa BattlĂł, and the Templo de la Sagrada Familia are all there.
For art lovers, mostly modern artists are featured...Picasso museum in the city, Fundacio MirĂł, and others. Side trip to Figueres for DalĂ's house and museum is well worth the trip.
Other side trips are any of the little sea side towns...I went to Tarragona - Really good Roman Ruins and a great amphitheater with a view of the Mediterranean, and Girona, really neat little town to the north, also with some great older buildings, and an arcade that is 500 years old, and Figueres. I wanted to go to Cadaqués, but we didn't make it there. Mont Serrat for the monastery, wine country, and the cavas (champagneries)
It's really all about what you would prefer. |
