3 weeks in Switzerland...?

My 7 year old and I will be in Zurich for three weeks this summer. We're staying with friends, so we don't need accommodations while in Switzerland, but we may travel a bit.

What are your suggestions re: what to see and do while in Switzerland? Where would you travel to (France, Italy, etc.) and why? All suggestions welcome! I have never been to Switzerland and though my friend is Swiss and knows the country well, I wanted some other opinions too.

Thanks!

Definitely Lugano and the Italian part. Try taking a ferry to some of the grottoes. Your kid will love it and the food is great.

Other places I like are Lucerne for the scenery, Zurich to see the lake on a hot day, Montreux looks spectacular when I drive past, although I haven't visited the town itself. Near Basel (nice old town on the Rhein) in the north-west are Freiburg in Germany and Colmar in France, both well worth visiting if you'd like to visit some other countries while in Switzerland.

You can take the TGV and visit Paris and London for a few days. You can also visit different parts of Switzerland. You can start in Geneva which has a charming old town. You can then make your way to St. Moritz which is beautiful in the summer time. My favorite area - though - is the Swiss Italian part of Switzerland. Go to Lugano and enjoy the best of Switzerland and Italy wrapped into one.

zermatt is amazing. klein matterhorn (snowwyyy and the highest viewpoint in europe!!!) and the gornergrat rail. could stay for a night or go for a day. but spose it would have to be a few days. cos you have to get the mountain rail which is an adventure in itself. your 7 year old would love it! plus on the klein matterhorn there is an underground bit with ice sculptures and skiing still goes on. lots to do :-)
