I'd suggest a city by a lake.

In this case, not Berne and not Basel.

Zurich and Geneva are very nice. In Zurich, you have a very nice night life and good restaurants and in Geneva, you have the international organizations. Both of these cities have very nice old towns.

If you come in the summer during the Jazz Festival in Montreux, I would suggest Montreux. Why? It's simply the best jazz festival or if you want the best music festival in the world. The scenery is beautiful.

This is Chateau Chillon (10 minutes walk from Montreux):

This is the Freddie Mercury statue at the quai of Montreux:

Another beautiful view on Montreux:

I'm sure that you know "Smoke On The Water" by Deep Purple.

The song is about an incident during the jazz festival in the early 70s.

Montreux is one of my favorite places in Switzerland. If it's not festival time it might be a bit too quite.

I'd go for Lucerne, because it has everything a Swiss city should have: the lake, nice lake promenades, the famous wooden bridge, an old town, good museums (visit the panorama!), and it is located close to the mountains, with good weather you have a great view. Take a ship trip around the lake, and if you like hiking, climb the Burgerstock (there's an elevator too).
If coming from Italy, though, the closest option would be Locarno, a beautiful city in the Ticino, it has a Lake, too, and is located in the Alps. Visit the old castle there and have a walk along the lake. If you have a car, go a little bit into the Valle Verzasca, see the big dam, and a little bit further Ponte del Salto is a wonderful place, you get blue and green clear water and stone formations.
Have fun...

I went and stayed in Lausanne for about 2 months. It was amazing. I was there in the winter and the snow was just gorgeous. Very nice people, great transportation.

Zürich because:

- a nice city with many things to do
- close to explore many other places like Rapperswil (lovely town with a castle), the Rhine Falls, just a short train ride to famous Lucerne,Bern (the capital city) etc.

And as "Bix" mentionned: the french part is great too. There you shouldn't miss the small wine producing villages and taste a glass or two...,Lausanne or have a boat ride on Lac Leman plus enjoying the mountain scenery.

If you are an art lover, tough to pass up Basel.
