Are court reporters in demand in Switzerland? |
I am an American, but I have lived in Switzerland before. I speak some German and know my way around. I have been back in the US going to school for court reporting, but I really want to return to Switzerland. Does anyone know if there is a demand for us there? Any idea as to salary ranges there? I have plenty of questions -- anyone have any answers?

Wie werde ich Gerichtsschreiber?
VOLONTARIAT. Wer Gerichtsschreiberin oder Gerichtsschreiber werden möchte, braucht ein erfolgreich abgeschlossenes Jus-Studium. Bis anhin war ein lic. iur. Grundbedingung – neu ist es ein Masterabschluss in der Jurisprudenz. Dann erfolgt via eines Volontariats – es sollte jedoch nicht das erste überhaupt sein – der Berufseinstieg. Es gelten die normalen Arbeitszeiten des jeweiligen Kantons. Im Gerichtssaal ist bei Männern ein Anzug mit Krawatte Pflicht. Der Einstiegslohn im Volontariat beträgt 2600 Franken brutto. Bei der ersten Festanstellung kann von einem Monatslohn von rund 7000 Franken ausgegangen werden. Als Aufstiegsmöglichkeit winkt der Wechsel ans Kantonsgericht – die zweite, höhere Instanz. Was sich auch finanziell lohnt. Der Beruf des Gerichtsschreibers gilt auch als Trittbrett für eine weitere Karriere zum Beispiel als Anwalt oder als Richter. Wer den Beruf liebt, kann ihn aber auch als Berufung bis zur Pensionierung ausüben. Am Strafgericht Baselland gibt es Beispiele für all diese beschriebenen Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten.

I found a couple of announcements, and it appears that you have to have a law degree. What you can look into also is interpreting in court if your German is really good. You might have to take a couple of interpreting courses here since the Swiss like it when you have a degree from here. Or, you can look into translation from German into English. Good luck!
PS Also, you really have to have a permit that allows you to work in Switzerland, because otherwise, you will NEVER be hired by a company to work here to do a job that another Swiss or European is qualified to do. The company will have to prove that they tried for 3 months to find someone and couldn't. I know this from experience. |
