Can you give me some ideas about what i can do in Geneva, Switzerland over the Christmas period? |
Hello,
My partner and i are flying to Geneva on 24/12/08 - 28/12/08 to spend Christmas there. We don't have any family there or anything so would like ideas for what we can do to make our holiday special. Are there any events to look out for? Will restaurants etc be open on Christmas Day (25th) for a Christmas meal? Any other pointers or suggestions for places that we can go to that are accessible by train, as we will not be hiring a car, would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Alice |

at christmas time there are limited possibilities of what you can do in Geneva. some restaurants will be open at Dec 25th but not all (be aware that in Switzerland most of the people celebrate Xmas at Dec 24th).
what can you do
- explore the city of Geneva and visit the most famous objects of interest, the old town, the international monument to the reformation, the palace of nations, the jet d'eau.

- you can do a trip to Lausanne by train to visit the olympic museum (ask prior in the hotel lobby if it's open at this time).
- if you like the mountains you can visit Zermatt to see one of the most famous mountains, the Matterhorn. the journey by train takes a little less than 4 hours one way. this makes only sense if the weather is good (somewhat sunny and not too much cloudy).

for train schedule you should use this site

have a nice stay in Switzerland |

there is not much to do in geneva at christmas since it's a family holiday, so people stay home and celebrate. I'm not sure that you are going to find a lot of restaurants open, so you might wanna come back in Geneva in summer, when everything is open, beautiful weather, very lively, and keep your christmas trip to go to the mountains, skiing, that's usually what tourists do at christmas, and ski resorts are very nice and ready for the tourist season. |
