Basel is cheaper than Zurich but you pay about 30% more taxes.
In Basel its very easy to find a good cheap apartment, in Zuerich its very, very, very hard. Up to 50 people can be on the waitinglists:

Basel is not half as big as Zurich. It's at the frontier of Germany and France though. You can cross the boarderfor cheap shopping.
Basel has a river, Zurich a lake.
You probably gain more in Zurich, but the costs of living are higher than in Basel.
