Switzerland is not only tourism...
As usually, you find basic facts with aunt Wiki, in the case of Switzerland, the corresponding link is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switzerland

As for doing business, check the website of the Swiss-American chamber of commerce: http://www.amcham.ch/

If you only want to mention a typical Swiss food item, what else than chocolate could it be? Some people might say that "Röschti" is typically Swiss - but the Americans do almost the same, they only call it hash browns... You should be able to buy it in bags (look for Maggi or Knorr, both most famous Swiss food brands).
If you want to be better, here is an easy to do recipie for another typical Swiss dish, Cheese Fondue (still, be reminded that this originates from neighbouring Haute Savoie and Franche Comté in France - regions that have very tight connections with Switzerland)
1 lb. shredded Swiss cheese (half Gruyère/half Vacherin, never but never use Emmental, instead of Vacherin, take Appenzeller)
3 tbsp. flour
4 clove fresh garlic
2 c. dry, not too fruity white wine
Pepper, nutmeg
3 tbsp. cherry brandy (Kirsch)
2 loaves Italian or French bread, cut in cubes, crust on each side
Rub fondue pot with garlic; pour in wine and cheese. Set over moderate heat stirring constantly with wooden fork or spoon until cheese is melted. Add pepper and nutmeg to your taste. Then mix flour with half a glass of wine, add, stirr again. Let simmer for just a moment, then add Kirsch. Serve and keep bubbling hot over burner. Spear bread cubes through soft side into crust; dunk and swirl in fondue. Serves 2 - 3.
@ Sylvan: Thanks for the compliment! However, sorry to oppose, but the genuine Röschti has NO cheese in it! And of course do the French (and Italian and Raeto-Romansh) Swiss eat this, too.
As I try not to pretend anything without mentioning according resources, here is the recipe:
2 spoonfuls of fat (cleared butter or lard)
750 grams of potatoes cooked in the skin on the previous day
(alternatively: 750 grams of raw potato)
1 spoonful of salt
Peel and grate the potatoes with a Röschti-grater (if you do not have a grater, cut them into small slices). Heat the fat in a frying pan, add the potatoes and salt them. Fry and toss until golden-brown and (in the case you use raw potatoes) done. (http://www.pmgeiser.ch/index.php?id=CHFoodRoeschti ) |

Since the previous answer addressed just about anything I could give you for websites, I'll skip to the foods question.
It depends what Canton of Switzerland you're in, because there are Italian, Germanic, and French influences. All over Switzerland, though it originated in the French portions, fondue is considered a very 'Swiss' sort of food, though it's slightly complicated to simply 'bring with' to a presentation. In the Germanic portion, it's rösti, which is not QUITE hashbrowns, actually, because it is always made with cheese inside of the potatoes. More similar to a German potato pancake. The French Swiss will NOT eat this, there's actually a very strong division of where people will and will not eat rösti. In the Italian influenced portion, the only thing I can think of that is Tincinese rather than Italian is the white merlot, but alcohol is probably not something to bring with.
Simplest bet would be something like brioche, which are sold everywhere here, or Swiss chocolate. Toblerone isn't the BEST chocolate you'll find here, but if you're NOT in Switzerland, it's one of the easiest to find. |
