Driving to Switzerland from Germany in early December, where should we go? |
We have two very little ones, a 2 year old and a 6 month old. We dont have much more time in Europe and I was thinking about doing a drive to switzerland in Dec. Maybe a week there. I'm trying to find out what the best city for us to visit would be, but its hard because it would have to be somewhere we could take the kids and stroll. I'm thinking a bigger city with christmas festivals going on, someplace easy to drive to from the autobahn. Then from there take a train into the alps, maybe to visit a city at a higher elevation nearby. There has to be someplace like that someone familiar with the country would know of. I would love some advice! Thank you! |

Pretty tough to say, with so little children and very unsteady weather in December. Please also be aware that there are no Christmas markets here in Switzerland compared to Germany (something I really miss).
Well, the easiest and closest bet for you would be most likely Zurich, which at least will be decorated very nicely for the Christmas season and have some events and things (like out door ice skating ring) going on.
From Zurich it is quite easy to go into the higher mountains on a day trip. I would suggest Engelberg or Grindelwald, with Engelberg being a bit closer. Other cities easily reached from Zurich are for example St. Gallen or Lucerne.
What can you do in Zurich, that is also nice for smaller children?
- nice zoo (also in winter)
- enjoy the city and the lake
- giant toy store (but you and your credit card will hate it afterwards ;-) )
- a very relaxed city
- some museums that are also suitable for children |

Why don^t you stop in Basel or ZĂĽrich and than you can try Interlaken or Engelberg, near Lucerne |

Interlaken is a good bet. It is right in the heart of the mountains and has great train links to the mountains. Hope you enjoy your tour! |
