I love the country and its people and have many good friends there, but to be fair, consider this:
- it was at least until recently (and probably still is) that the country had the highest percentage of HIV positive population in Europe,
- it was one of the last democratic countries in the world to introduce voting rights for women
- they allow assisted suicide.
- the last witch in Europe was burnt at stake in this country.
- they actually had some terrorists back in 1960s and 1970s!
(when Jura region wanted to split with Berne and become a separate canton)
- their chemical factories in Basel seriously polluted the Rhine a few times
- they use GM food! (the purple Milka cow!...;-)))
- their banks protect financial resources of some of the least pleasant people in this world (gangsters, dictators)
- they did not bother to change their constitution since 1848!...:-))
- the petrol there is cheap, yet the public transport is very exepensive (not something ecologically friendly) |

Thanks.
I'm not Swiss but I guess you could call me a Switzerlander since I live here.
It is nice, isn't it? Though have some have said, sometimes nicer to visit than to live. |

I have lived there for 8 years and I must say that for average person CH is very expensive...and try to live there but be someone else, like Portugese or Turkish or Polnish or Russian or Sri Lankan or Yugoslavian and you will see how Swiss are nice and welcoming....:(
As long as you come there and flash US Dollars, yeah they will LOVE you!!! |

just a few things to point out to some of the posts:
-is a high percentage of a HIV positive population bad for a country? also the number i presume are for people diagnosed...
-no one is proud of introducing voting rights for women late, but again that is not today and does it make a cournty bad today?
-allowed assisted suicide is jotted down here in a very general way, also other (western countries) do have the death penalty. what does it have to do with visiting a country?
-witches? the last burning is a while back, as mentioned above, some countries still have the death penalty...
-what's with the terrorists, it's a question of definition what a terrorist is. by the way the swiss populationd held a vote in the end
-polliution is not anymore something that a country can deal by itself. it's an universal thing today...
-not so sure about GM food and just for your information, the purple Milka cow is german.....
-the swiss banks have changed their laws several times and are no longer attractive to hide or protect financial resources. money that has been found from doubtfull sources has been returned or still is.
-they did change their constitution and also if not, maybe it was not that bad after all (the USA used it as an example...)
-yes here you are right, petrol is quite cheap and public transport is not very, but rather expensive...
-yes switzerland has the name of being expensive, but other countries have long caught up or even overtaken switzerland on costs.
-i do not believe that swiss are generally not nice and welcoming to Portugese etc.. (by the way Yugoslavia does not exist anymore) but you have racists in every country!! i do not believe you have to flash with US dollars to be loved, if you see the world that way, that is sad...
as a conclusion:
leave the cliches behind and be interested, wherever you go, may it be Switzerland or any other country! |
