Switzerland is a beautiful country in any part of the year ... 4 day trip is a bit short to see thoroughly the whole Switzerland ...I suggest you checked the below: -

a) From Zurich, proceed to stay in St Gallen at Hotel Ekkehard Tel no. 0041 71 244 04 44

You can see the Old Town ... every Thursday is late night shopping), Cathedral, City Park and the people ... food is of many choices like italian, Chinese, Fast Food, Mexican etc... you can go to nearby Appenzerland Land ... chocolate factory in Flawil ... all by train

b)Make a tour to from St Gallen - Chur - Zermatt - Bern - Zurich

Make a trip from St Gallen to stay overnight at Chur ( a lot of night life here) at the Hotel Chur ... check out to catch the Glacier Express the next day to go through fantastic views of the Alps (5 and half hour journey) to Zermatt

Arrived in Zermatt in late afternoon and check in to Hotel Bristol ... check out this tourist town (very interesting town i.e. only electric cars) ... wake up early at 5.45 am the next day to catch sunrise view of Mt. Matterhorn .... then take a journey to either Gronegerat or Kl. Matterhorn .... You will be back by noon in Zermatt ...

Then check out from Hotel Bristol and take a train to Zurich via Bern ... stopover at Bern (capital of Switzerland) for about 2 hours to see House of Parliments, Clock Tower, Bear Pits etc ... Then continue your train journey to Zurich to stay in the many hotels available

3) Fly back to your country with lots of Appenzeller Cheese, chocolates, Swiss Army Knives (they can personalize them nowadays)

Have a good trip ....

October is a fantastic time to visit Switzerland, though I must agree with a previous post that 4 days is not NEAR enough time to see this great country. I lived there right after college, playing American football, and immersed myself in the culture. After living there for over a year, I highly recommend that you DON'T go to the tourist-y areas. You will get a much better deal on travel and room rates. I suggest the Swiss-German part, specifically the Berner Oberland, which will give you access to Interlaken and thus, the gateway to the three grand peaks of the Swiss Alps: Jungfrau, Eiger, & the Monch. The Swiss laugh at tourists for visiting the Matterhorn, because the Jungfrau is higher, half the price, and more glorious. I lived in Thun, which is approx. 23 kilometers from there. A fabulous area, with many views, resorts, and castles. The Swiss-Italian portion is great as well...specifically Lugano and Lucarno. All said in ONLY FOUR DAYS, you should limit yourself to four from the list of Lucerne, Lugano, Bern/Thun/Interlaken, St. Gallen

I'd go to the italian part (better chance of sunny weather) like Lugano,Locarno and take a train ride thru the alpes.
