Hi there,

from London you will have two ways to get to Switzerland.
Either fly to Geneva or Zurich.
Both cities are very nice, but also very different in themselve.
Were Geneva is located in the French speaking part of Switzerland, is Zurich located in the German speaking part.
This does have a huge impact on culture, architecture and people.

I would suggest to take one of those cities as your base and then head into the mountains for one or two days.

Geneva
Is the capital of the state of Geneva and located at the south west end of lake Geneva close to the French border. Next to being a comercial center is Geneva also one of the headquarters for the United Nations and you would be able to visit some of their buildings there.
The French Alps and other mountains are pretty close and you get very nice panoramic views of those right from Geneva.
As side trips would I suggest the following:
Lausanne - very nice smaller city close to Geneva
Montreux - scenic town (famous jazz festival)
State of Wallis (Valais) - to the east, Rhone valley, Zermatt (Matterhorn) for mountain experience

Zurich
This is the comercial center of the German speaking part of Switzerland and sometimes claims to be the inofficial capital of Switzerland. The city is famous for its banking center, shopping and lifestyle, but also has kept its old town charms.
Zurich is located at the lake of Zurich and offers you many field trips in many directions.
Luzern - the old center of Switzerland
Stein am Rhein - very scenic old town north of Zurich
Interlaken (Grindelwald) - Bernese Mountians, gives you views of the Eiger Northface and the Jungfraujoch (top of Europe)

Just take some of the names and search for them in the internet, so you can get some pictures of all these town.

One remark, Switzerland might feel a bit expensive when traveling here due to current exchange rates and cost of living.

Have fun on your trip

I would fly to Zurich and enjoy the city for the day. I would then take the train to Bern. Bern is absolutely beautiful. I do agree that Interloken is beautiful as well, but not as accessable as Bern. Plus Bern is the capitol and has some amazing architecture. When you see the bears(bern) you should have lunch at the restaurant there and get some of their homemade beer :)

I'm an American who lived in Switzerland for several years.

Zermatt and the Matterhorn are great, but the trip is expensive and if there is a cloud in the sky, it will shroud the Matterhorn--just be warned.

For an amazing mountain view, Shilthorn is spectacular.

Luzern and Interlaken are great. Try taking a boat ride around a part of the lakes in either city.

For an interesting, less traveled Renaissance city, try Solothurn. It is a beautiful walled city in Canton Bern.

Geneva is also very nice. I enjoyed the Red Cross Museum and Chillion (sp?) Castle on Lake Geneva

Interlaken. I never made it to the italian boarder, but my grandfather said that was cool too.

Matterhorn, two lakes and lots of mountains. Interlaken is (between the lakes) latin..

People are the nicest I found. been to central europe three times backpacking etc.
