How can I get a job in Switzerland? |
I'm going to be finishing university this June, and want to move straight over to Switzerland with my boyfriend who I met a few years ago.
I'm just not sure how to go about getting a job..
My french is okay, I can get by, it takes time to adjust, but I have confidence that I'll improve over there, but how do I apply for a job in the first place? I think Switzerland, because it's not in the EU is difficult to find work, especially in a specific area (and I defo want to go to a Swiss Romande area)
By the time I finish uni, I should have a BA Linguistics (hopefully!)
and a very basic TEFL qualification.
I have experience working in a bar, and waitressing.
Should I make a CV in french? Just any ideas if anyone knows!
Thanks alot! |

Well, to begin with, you need to apply for a working/residence permit. If you don't have a working /residence permit you will not be able to either work or live in Switzerland. To get a permit you will need to justify your stay. To do so you will have to find a job with a company that is willing to help you get a permit, enroll in an academic course, marry a Swiss citizen, amongst others. The B permit (student permit) is the easiest one to get; you could apply to a masters degree in Geneva or Lausanne and find a student job.
The easiest way of finding jobs, after you get your permit, is to submit your CV (in English and French) to a human resources company (e.g Adecco, Manpower). You can also try to find jobs through the internet but it is not always as effective. I know that there are a lot of jobs being offered at international agencies in Geneva. The problem is that to get a job in an international agency you first need to do an internship of 3 months/6 months before they consider hiring you permanently. If you look carefully, you will be able to find a lot of jobs that will not require from you to be proficient in French (e.g. Foreign companies, International Organizations). |

If you are a national of a EU country, you should have not too many problems. Look for a job, apply for it and then the employer might get you a work permit. (You always have to remember that the whole HR administration for foreigners with a B permit requires more work.) The best chance to get work in the beginning is in bar work or waitressing. Once you have work you can plan for the future. Currently, we have a much lower influx of foreigners due to the worsening work situation here. |

To get a job, you need to be fluent in the language spoken where you're headed. The pecking order is as follows; Swiss, European, American, god help you if you're anyone else.
To hire someone that is NOT Swiss, the company is legally required to PROVE that you are capable of doing something that a Swiss citizen could not do, which makes it rough. To stay, you need to apply for a permit, which is difficult to do unless you do it through a place of employ or a school. Try looking online for companies and see if there is a way to apply for internships or jobs online- that will tell you better what your odds are of being able to accomplish your goal, but I would have an alternative game plan, because two months is not a long time to make what needs to happen happen. |
