How difficult is it for a foreigner to buy a property in Switzerland?

Much more difficult than in most countries. Throughout most of Switzerland it is basically banned, although you can purchase commercial (i.e. non-residential) property if I remember correctly. And if you actually live in Switzerland, you can buy a house to live in, but not as a holiday home, until you have been there several years.

Usually, it is just in a few resort areas in the mountains that foreigners can buy.

However, there have been recent moves to loosen this up a bit. But there will still remain lots of restrictions.

And, oh yes, as said above, it's very expensive! Go 500 metres over the border to France, Germany or Italy and the price will plummet.

If you are a US citizen very difficult. If you were a resident of another European country, then it might be possible. There are a few exceptions in resort areas.
