How is life in Switzerland?

How is life in Switzerland when compared to US? I had been living in Northwestern part of US for a while. Is it expensive? How do people commute from one place to other - car or train? Do people speak English?

This is difficult to answer as I live in Switzerland and have never been further west than London. I don't know if life here is expensive. Many people say so but for me it's just normal. When it comes to clothes or food there's a great variety of quality. You can buy cheap stuff as well as expensive stuff.
Switzerland has a very great railway system. And there are also a lot of buses and in the city there are "trams" (like little trains which drive on the streets. I guess it's like the subway just above the ground). I use the train every day to go to school and many people use it for going to work. But there are also people who use the car as it's just more convenient if you don't have to wait for the train and can drive directly to the building where you work.
Most people here speak English. Although in the French part of Switzerland people are sometimes hard to understand because they have a very peculiar pronunciation sometimes... There's also a part of Switzerland where people speak Italian but German is the main language. (or rather Swiss German) Nowadays everyone learns English at school. Some time back people only used to learn Italian and/or French because these were the languages spoken in our country. Now we still learn French but also English because you can converse with almost everyone in English as it's one of the most widespread languages.

Sorry, that was a bit too much I guess. If there are any faults in my English it's because I'm only sixteen and still learning;) Switzerland is a very beautiful country to live in though because it's clean (and that's not only a cliche!) and you have a great variety of scenery (mountains, flat parts, warm regions where there are palm trees growing, many lakes and rivers and all in a convenient distance of each other!). Hope this answers your question:)

I spend half my time in Switzerland and half my time in Canada. I am a Canadian citizen and have travelled to many of the European countries. I can't compare Switzerland to the US, but I can definitely give you some information regarding the country as a foreigner. Most of the areas I have visited, which are larger cities, do speak English. I actually found it rare to come across someone who did not speak English, most do. For the luxury accommodations that you can buy/rent in Canada, you generally don't get the same quality in Switzerland. Housing and rental is very expensive, but again, this is subjective according to what ones standard would be. Food and other necessities are pretty standard to North America. They have an excellent tram / train system and most people walk or commute by tram / trains. It is by far my favorite country over in Europe and I find there are many similarities to Switzerland and Canada as far as quality of life. The people are kind and warm. The wage is quite high in Switzerland and I'm almost sure that there is no minimum wage, but people do get compensated quite well. It is also quite hard to become a citizen. I believe you must be a resident of the country for 12 years. My husband is a current resident and working towards citizenship.

Switzerland is one of the countries of the world with the highest life standard. Medical care, the quality of food, public transportation.... Almost everything is perfect.

Switzerland is very expensive. Some places such as Zurich is more expensive than other places.

People commute usually by public transportation (train, bus, tram).

People usually do speak English.
