Not sure if it's possible to count the mountains in Switzerland, there are so many, and I doubt if anyone's tried it.

You say you've chosen Switzerland because it's a French speaking country. Well, actually it's not. While French is one of the national languages only 21% of Swiss speak it, and that's only in the area near the French border. The majority of Swiss, 74%, speak German. The four national languages are German, French, Italian and Rumantsch.

633 by one count. It depends on where you cut off a two-peaked mountain from two mountains, and how tall a hill has to be to count as a mountain. But there you go. (I can think of several off-hand that I didn't find in the list.)

BTW, it's true that only about 20% of the population has French as a first language, but most speak it to some extent.

* The steepest cog railway in the world (Pilatus, canton of Lucerne, gradient of 48%).
* The steepest funicular railway in the world (the Gelmer at the foot of the Grimsel Pass, canton of Berne, gradient of 106% in places).
* The steepest road used by coaches in Europe (from the Kander to the Kien Valley in the Bernese Oberland, gradient of 28%).
