In terms of national referendums, my fellow Swiss go off to vote an average of two times a year to vote on major issues such as smoking bans, financing new railway infrastructure and so on. Normally voting occurs in May/June and September/October. Some years voting will also occur in February/March and November as well (but this is uncommon)
Furthermore, the Swiss populace go to the urns every four years in order to elect members of parliament who will in turn elect the Swiss Federal Council - the highest authority in the country.
