Very civilized! Friendly and matter of fact folk.

Mostly very reserved and conservative, except the teenagers.
But friendly and helpful. They love their tourists, unlike some
places I went in Europe... They are very polite, also, so
make sure to say "please" and "thank you" ( Bitte and
Danke) a lot. If you at least try to meet them partway, they
will do the rest, as far as the language thing goes. For
instance, if you ask in German, "do you speak English?"
(it's considered rude to ask it in English), and they recognize
your accent as Canadian or American, they will usually
answer you in English and ask which one you are. They
can be frighteningly nit-picking perfectionists at times,
but you just have to accept that and move on...(My boss
there was one of these types...) And they are sticklers
for rules, rules, rules! (No music after 10 pm, no laundry
if it's not your assigned day, etc.) There is usually only one
way to do things--the Swiss way! And you don't ask why.
It just is...

Well, three different cultures, so it's really hard to describe.
Western Switzerland (French speaking) are more like the.....French!!!
Eastern side is German speaking....so ........................
and in the South East , the Italian part (Ticino), ....
Guess you got the idea.

Well, it has taken all the will power I have not to be biased, but I think the the Swiss folks are almost as friendly and genuine as us Aussies, just mention my name and you'll get some pretty good cheese, although, theres has holes in it.

irene k

Quite international, mostly friendly and many speak english or want to try it out on you - be aware, lol. Guess you'll get on pretty well maybe better than in France or Italy where they have quite a problem to communicate in other languages if not latino.
