Oh, I hope you have a nice trip... It is a wonderful place to visit (and live). I agree about the Swiss army knives and chocolates, they are great souvenirs. My visitors so far have taken back knives; chocolates; cow bells, foreign magazines, squeeze tubes of mayonnaise and mustards (senf), and ketchup; Swiss made pots and pans; cheese fondue pots (Swiss emblem) and fondue plates; watches are nice, but very expensive ... Swatch watches are Swiss and can be bought 70 chf and up; Dakine bookbags; Navy Boot shoes/purses/wallets; Jack Wolfskin outdoor wear; scarves; Swiss facial moisturizers; eyeglass frames; Swiss wallets; also wooden children's toys (go to a Spielhaus). Good places to shop are Migros MMM, large COOPs (these are both large grocery stores); Manor, or Globus Department Stores. There are so many places to shop if you are going to any larger city in Switzerland. There are many open air markets for cheeses, breads, fruits, veggies, etc.. These are great places for sampling local wares. If you like cheese, try to eat Raclette while you are here. It is melted cheese scraped on top of potatoes and bread, usually eaten with small pickles and onions if you want. Breads and pastries are really good here. If you are going to a city that is on the border of Germany, it might be worth a trip to the Black Forest for your cuckoo clock. Germany is a great place to stock up on souvenirs ... much cheaper than Switzerland on a lot of things. Have a nice, safe trip.

If you like chocolate, eat as much as you can while you're there and then take heaps back with you. Get it from the supermarket (Migros, Coop, Jumbo - the first two are all over the cities). There are also alot of really yummy bakery items, cakes, tartes etc.

If you like savoury, go for some 'viande sechee' - salted and dried meat - delicious with tiny gherkins (cornichons). Try to get up to the mountains to have a fondue overlooking the valley....

As for taking things home, it all depends on your taste. A watch, cuckoo clock or swiss army knife would be a typical souvenir. You could go something for something different and take home a fondue set - cheese fondue mixes can be bought ready made almost anywhere around the world.

There are a lot of great things to buy, it will be a matter of choosing what.....

Have fun.
