I'm travelling to Bern, Switzerland. I here its bilingual, so will I be able to speak French there?

I'm travelling to a ski resort 60km south of Bern - I was wondering whether it would be acceptable to speak French

in the city of Bern you will find a lot of French speaking people despite the Swiss capital is mainly Swiss German speaking. but 60km south of Bern, i guess you either go to Adelboden or Lenk (dänk), they hardly speak French.
there, in the Bernese Oberland they speak a very broad Swiss German (Bärneroberländer dialect). but hey, it's always acceptable to speak French in Switzerland, wherever you are. French is an official language in Switzerland.

You could probably get by speaking French there. They speak more French closer to the French border, Italian in the south, and German just about everywhere. I was in Lausanne and it was mostly German and French.

The main language spoken is Swiss-German. English is supplanting French as the favorite second language of the Bernese, but both are widely spoken, especially as the Bern canton is officially a bilingual canton (German and French), and Bern itself is only 12 km from the nearest French-speaking village.

Switzerland is a very amazing place. People learn at least 3 languages there in schools. And generally, German, French, English, Italian and some other European languages are spoken in Switzerland - really!

Dean O
In switzerland there are 4 languages...
French
German
Italian
Swiss (Mixture of German and French)
The people will understand some of your french. Enjoy your Trip
