Consider the Golden Pass scenic route in Switzerland. You can cover many places and you are able to choose the time of departure. Purchase the Swiss Pass as it will save you a lot of money + entrance to all museums free !
The Golden Pass starts/ends Geneva/Luzern.
I suggest that you stay 1 night in Geneva, 1 night in Montreux, 2 nights in Interlaken, 2 nights in Luzern and 1 night in Zurich.
There's nothing much in Geneva but it's a place worth seeing + your flight departs/arrives in Geneva airport (most probably). Then, take a train to Montreux. If you have the Swiss Pass, you can also take a cruise to Montreux. However, this takes longer time. In Geneva, I stayed in Hotel Central. The location is very convenient and it is cheap.
In Montreux, you must visit the Castle of Chillon. If you have the Swiss pass, entrance is free. It is nowhere near city centre so you have to take the bus/boat. Again, transport is free here if you have Swiss Pass that's valid for that day.
Interlaken is a very interesting place. It's a small town full of souvenir shops and there are a lot of different sports. You have to go to Jungfraujoch, the highest mountain in Europe. It is very expensive to go to the top but if you have the Swiss Pass, you have 50% off. It takes you about 2.5 hours to get to the top. The scenery is really nice on the way up and since you have to change trains twice, you can spend some time at those small towns for lunch or just walk around till your next train arrives at the station. I stayed in Rugenpark B&B and I loved this place. It's near the train station and the owners are very friendly people + excellent breakfast.
There are lots to do in Luzern too. Go to the tourist information straight away after you get off the train. The tourist information is in the same building. If you have time, you can take a cruise and see places nearby. The cruise is free if you have the Swiss Pass.
Zurich is where you can catch your flight home. If you travel this way, you don't have to go all the way back to Geneva to catch your return flight home. This saves you a lot of time. Accommodation in Zurich is expensive so book early.
If you do not want to stay in Zurich, you can catch a train from Luzern and go to the airport straight. It takes about 1 hour to get to Zurich airport from Luzern.
If you would like to visit more places, combine the above route with those places. Visit http://www.swisstravelsystem.com/ for more information on the Swiss Pass.
I hope you find the above information useful. |
