Congratulations! Travelling the country by train is the best choice - since you virtually can go anywhere by that means of transport.
How about "the slowes fast train in the world", the Glacier Express? Travel on the famous Swiss mountain railways from St.Moritz to Zermatt and vice versa or from Piz Bernina to the Matterhorn. A 7 1/2 hour railway journey across 291 bridges, through 91 tunnels and across the Oberalp
Pass at 2’033 metres in altitude. A panoramic trip through the Alps in the heart of Switzerland. The Glacier Express travels a beautiful route between the sights of the Graubünden holiday region, the sunny Valais region with its glacier landscape, and the beautiful regions of the South. Travel in comfort through the unspoilt natural beauty of a landscape rich in ancient, fragrant moun- tain forests, peaceful Alpine meadows, rushing mountain streams and mountain valleys, soaked in tradition and centuries-old culture.
The sheer joy of travel aboard the Glacier Express: presenting you with a cross-section of the richly varied Swiss countryside. On board the Glacier Express, meals are prepared specially for you by the chef in the dining car. Coffee, drinks and snacks are brought to your seat by our Railbar staff. The Glacier Express: glistening mountains in Summer; a fairy-tale landscape deep in snow in Winter; a magical carpet of flowers in Spring; a splendid tapestry of colour in Autumn. The Glacier Express: one of the world's most famous train journeys!
This is just one of the thousands of train journeys through the land of the Helvets. Try it, you 'll like it! |

Mr. CH already wrote about the most famous route- the Glacier Express.
But I would add: use the PostBus as well! http://www.myswitzerland.com/en.cfm/travel/getting_around/offer-Travel_Gettingaround-Postauto-list.html
The PostBus is clearly a national institution! http://www.postauto.ch/en/index_pag.htm Dont miss that. |

u can either start ur journey from Geneva or Zurich by train. u have special pass available with Chemin de Fer (Railways) in Switzerland.
u have chosen the right approach in travelling by train. u can see Lausanne, Lugano, Luzern, Basel, Bern, Geneva, Zurich, Neuchatel and other parts of Switzerland |

The above recommendations are great, I might add one, which is to be sure to take the train from Lausanne to Bern. The route takes you on a high ridge overlooking the vineyards of the eastern part of Lake Geneva, which themselves overlook Lake Geneva, with the Alps and the entrance to the valley of the RhĂ´ne / canton of Valais in the background.
Something like this: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/property/graphics/2007/10/13/opswitzerland113.jpg
I think that's actually an aerial view, but what you see from the train isn't that different.
If you can, try to be on one of those two-floor trains. I think most of the trains that run between Lausanne and Bern are such trains but you can make sure when getting your ticket; the 2nd floor offers better views. If you end up on a regular one-floor train, no big deal, the view's still great. |
