Switzerland has become the 25th member country of the Schengen zone on December 12, 2008. Tourist visa issued by Switzerland are now valid for the entire Schengen zone and Schengen visa also authorize to travel to Switzerland.

The United Kingdom will not join the Schengen zone since the country has arrangements with a lot of Commonwealth countries for visa free entry. Being a Schengen country it would mean that the United Kingdom would also have to adopt the common Schengen visa-free country list which would mean the visa requirement for lots of countries like Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Dominica, Maldives, Namibia and many more which are visa free for the United States but need a visa for the Schengen zone.

Only 25 non-European countries are on the Schengen visa waiver list whereas 50 countries do not need visa for the United Kingdom.

To apply to the Schengen procedures is a prerequisite for new member countries of the European Union (EU). They are required to adopt the Schengen procedures after a certain transition time whereas the old EU countries had the option to chose whether joining Schengen or not.

No...Switzerland is not a schengen state...

no. schengen is an agreement you can choose to join if you fill the terms...and britain and swiss choose not to be in it...like britain is in the EU, but uses pound instead of euro :D
