Is it reasonalbe and fullfilling for an American to live/work in Geneva? |
I'm considering a job offer with Proctor-Gamble in Geneva, Switzerland. I've never lived abroad and have no friends there, although I'm extremely open and interested in other cultures.
Can anyone offer up an answer or some advice? |

I've done this. And I have to say - it's totally worth it, but very difficult.
Mostly, it can be lonely. But - that might be not so difficult for you - it depends on what kind of person you are, and how old you are. Are you comfortable talking in other languages - even if you aren't very fluent? Do you like meeting new people - are you outgoing?
You'll probably meet mostly other internationals, but they'll be from all over the world - so it's actually pretty cool. It's true that the Swiss can be hard to get to know - but if you make an effort, you'll find some really interesting people.
Mostly, I think it's worth it because you'll learn a lot about yourself, and the world. You'll grow as a person. |

Geneva is called "little Paris"! It's a bustling city, tens of thousands of Americans plus of course other nationals live there. Additionally, it's in a country which is known for its fabulous countryside, Geneva has its own international airport with direct flights to the US, and, and, and... What more do you want? Welcome to Switzerland! |

I dont see why not!
Switzerland is a beautiful country, low crime rate, high standards, historic buildings and places, you can ski, hike, ride your bike, etc.
You'll meet new people and make new friends! Go for it!
So yes it would be reasonable (as in reasonably priced??then noooo!) and very fulfilling to live and work in Geneva! |

After living 2 1/2 years in Germany and 2 1/2 in Italy, my husband and I would HIGHLY recommend it! BUT--here's the clincher--Europe is quite expensive and the dollar is at an all time low to the Euro (and also the Swiss Franc). IF you'll be paid in dollars, as I was, know that it's not going to go as far as those with the same jobs working for Francs. Also, Geneva (and Switzerland in general) is particularly expensive. Bring money or at least be really realistic about what your standard of living might be. (BUT know regardless of where you live you will be safe, warmly welcomed (almost always), and in a reasonably nice abode.) Oh! Another thing about Geneva is that almost everyone speaks English. Good luck! Bonne chance! (And if you decide against the job, please give P & G my name!) |

If you're young and single, you will probably find Geneva very boring, very quickly. The native Swiss likely won't want to have anything to do with you, and the members of the expat community are old and tiresome as a rule. Not to mention how expensive the town is, as others have pointed out. But a job's a job, and it probably beats being at P&G's headquarters in Ohio. |
