Yes, it's true you don't need a visa for a stay up to 3 months in Switzerland (see link offered). As far as I know, France has a comparable practice - so it should not be any problem to visit France as well.

US Citizens do not need visa's to visit any country in the EU for a short time.

as long as u have your passport you dont need a visa to travel for short times in europe.
