My friend told me that all new buildings in Switzerland are required to also build a shelter.Also that every house is required to have an assault rifle and that all men are required to join the army for a period of time.Is this true??? |

Everyone in the army (about 200'000 men) gets a rifle (SIG 550) which he keeps at home, because you have to go practicing at the shooting range once a year, while not in service. Some troups and also higher ranks (officers and up) have a handgun (SIG P220) instead of a rifle.
The shelters are not mandatory anymore, the cold war is over.
Yes, all men are required to join the army - but it's easy now to get arount this as the army is too big for nowadays. You need to serve 260 days, usually stating when you are 19 years old. 17 to 21 weeks in one piece and then 3 weeks every year.

I don't know about the shelter and rifle thing, but the mandatory military service is true, just like in many other countries. Check out the wikipedia link below to see a list of all the countries that have this.
The shelter thing could be true, I guess, because it's also true in my country. But then we have a good reason for it, while I don't remember when was the last time Switzerland got bombed... |
