Travel in Switzerland is expensive. But it depends as well on how you choose to do it. Costs of travel by train can be reduced by buying a Swiss Pass or Swiss Flexi-Pass (http://www.swisstravelsystem.ch/?L=2) This pass is great and also includes admission on many, many museums and attractions and also half price fare on most cable cars. As for hotel, there are pensions and hostels that are more affordable. Hostelling International hostel (HI) in Switzerland are generally clean and comfortable and often accomodate couples and families. In the summer, camping is also an option as there are many campgrounds. It depends on how you do it. There are expensive hotels here for 500 dollars a night or ones for 80 dollars a night. Food in restaurants is expensive but a lot of the larger grocery store chains have cafeteria-style restaurants with affordable menus as does the Movenpick Marche.

Zurich is one of the more expensive cities in Europe but you can save $ by staying in cheaper hotels (Europeans object less to a room with a shared bath than ppl from N. America, but you can get used to it) and by buying groceries instead of eating out.
