1. High. Depends what you like to do, of course.
2. The spoken language is Zuriduetsch. The written language is standard German. Knowing at least one of those will make your life much better. However, I can't think of anyone off-hand who actually needed to learn German in order to move here.
3. My children's are.
4. High. I have never heard of a one-room apartment here...We pay over 2000 for a nice but not huge apartment just outside the city.
5. Give it a try, it's nice. Buy a half-tax card for the train, don't own a car.

Note about Mr. Who's comment: "so perfect knowledge is an absolute must if you really want to come - everything else which you might be told is a liar" What a lovely compliment! I've certainly never been told I have perfect knowledge of German before! I have lots of friends to pass on the lovely compliment too, as well. Merci vielmals.

Living in Switzerland might be your dream. Still, be reminded that the world wide economic crisis is also having its influence onto Switzerland. If you don't have very specialized skills it might be difficult to ge a job here.

About cost of living: http://www.swissworld.org/en/economy/wages_and_prosperity/cost_of_living/ Switzerland, besides Norway and Iceland is (sorry to say) the most expensive country on the continent.

Languages needed: Depending on the town you chose to live at: Either French in the whole of Western Switzerland, German in the Northern and North-Eastern part (but Alemanic is used by the locals in daily life - NOT a German dialect, but an independant language), Italian in the South. Note that beginners knowledge is not good enough, so perfect knowledge is an absolute must if you really want to come - everything else which you might be told is a liar.

The public school system is very good (free and compulsory), some of the Swiss universities belong to the world's leading academic circle. Is it a coincidence that Albert Einstein started his career at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich...?

Housing costs can be calculated if you read my first answer. They are VERY high - especially if you want to buy (the latter only under restrictions for foreigners). A single room appartment (which are very popular and therefore difficult to get) for 580 $ would be a rare case of very good luck - to be on the safe side, calculate at least 800 $.

Advices? Well, it's surely a safe and very clean (to me: overly clean) country. People seem to be friendly at first hand - but to get to know them really well it takes a long time. I suggest to come here for a vaccation first, travel around and then make your decision.

The costs of living in Switzerland are the second highest in Europe. Languages you would have to learn are German and Swyzerdütsch which is a German dialect. Switzerland has an excellent education system. To rent a single room apartment you would have a pay as average 668 Swiss francs ($580). The brochure in the attached web link provides excellent information about Switzerland.
