Lucerne is lovely (especially if you like tourists, but even so...).
If you're going on a clear day, I recommend that you NOT take the fastest train (IR or IC) because it mostly goes through tunnels and you miss the Zurich lake. Take the S8 to Thalwil, then the S28 to Zug, and from there whichever train tales you to Lucerne (I don't think there are any more tunnels).
Pilatus or a boat trip are good suggestions. I also suggest a walk along the city wall. |

It's very easy to travel to Lucerne from Zurich, it's about an hour away. You can easily get there by train, and you can go onto this website just to see the routes and times going to Lucerne by train. sbb.ch
Lucerne is a very nice city, I went their once and took a lake tour on a boat. I can't say where you should go in particular, but I can say you'll love it there, and will love Zurich also! It's my favorite city outside the U.S.! |

if it's a beautiful day, i would recommend to visit Lucerne. the time to travel by train is about 45 to 50 minutes from Zürich, depending if you have to change train in Zug or not.
check the timetable here

in Lucerne you can visit the town along the lake by the Water Tower and the Chapel Bridge.

if you arrive early enough and the weather is nice (not cloudy) you can also do a trip on the mount Pilatus from where you have a breathtaking view.

Absolutley!!! Even the train ride will be nice. I love Switzerland and we stayed in Zurich too and just took day trips to Lucerne and Interlocken. It was so pretty!!!
When you get to Lucerne there is a Tourist office right in the train station.. We booked a day trip that included a fairy ride around Lake Lucerne, a Cog wheel train up Mt Pilatus and a cable car down the mountain -- if they still have it (Im sure they do) BOOK IT!!!! It was GREAT and we saw a LOT!!!!
Also, In the Zurich Train station there is a food court/shopping area on the lower level...Some where right near the escalators/stairs there was a place you could get sandwiches...Get one for your train ride...I dream of that sandwich to this day....I wanna say it was cheese & Salami on a baguette but my friend swears it was cheese & tomato on a baguette...Either one Im sure would be good -- -IT WAS AWESOME!!!! |

You can travel to Lucerne from Zurich. Its maybe an hour away from one another. you can go and see the Chapel Bridge which is filled with paintings, or you could go see the Lion Monument. |

You can take the train from Zurich to Lucerne it takes a bit more than 1 hour.
It's worth visiting Lucern and one day is widely enough.
Don't miss the old city and the famous bridge. |

I would go to Lucerne before I would Zurich because Zurich is overrated it is not all that great if I were you I would travel to Lucerne and the surrounding area you know the little towns get the feel of the real Switzerland IMO |

In my opinion, Lucerne is the most overrated touristic place in Switzerland. It's nice but I won't get why everybody is going there. The famous bridge is even not an original.
I would go to Basel instead. It takes about an hour (same travel time like Zurich - Lucerne). Basel is one of the main centers of European humanism. Erasmus of Rotterdam, Paracelsus, Nietzsche, C.G. Jung and other great scientist were teachers at the oldest university north of the Alps (founded in 1461). It has a wonderful old town. The carnival of Basel will start next Monday and last 3 days. It's pretty amazing (unlike the one in Lucerne). Besides that, Basel has fantastic museums. The Kunstmuseum and Fondation Beyeler are a must for any tourist coming to Switzerland.
In my personal opinion, the only fascinating thing in Lucerne is its Concert Hall, which is close to the railway station (and the railway station itself designed by Calatrava). |
