Check www.accorhotels.com for prices on the Accor chain. They will by far be the cheapest hotels in Switzlerland. They are clean and safe (of course, all of CH is safe!) Basically a bed and a shower - very modern normally. A good price for a hotel in Switzerland is between $100 and $150 USD. From the Accor chain Novotel, Mercure and Doriant will be higher. The Etap, Ibis and Formula1 brands of this chain will cheaper - maybe $70 - $90 USD per night. The breakfast in these hotels is nothing but bread, jam and maybe cheese. They charge you about 14CHF for a lousy breakfast. You are better off leaving and stopping at a gas station for a gipfeli (a crossiant and coffee which will be better and cost you a couple of bucks). The advantage of a Accor hotel is that you normally have parking available (for a fee of course - nothing is free in CH). Not all hotels have parking and if they do it will be very expensive. A country hotel (No brand - just a lodge type along the road will easily run you $150 plus breakfast) These hotels are normally attached to a bar and resturant which are are normally excellent. BTW, why are you staying in Basel and Bern???? There are so many other nice places to go...Bern is better than Basel...for what it is worth :consider Fribourg CH - it is gorgeous and you will have great mountain views.

Queen of Swiss
Search in google for budget hotels swiss with the place name. If you want a cheap accomodation you could try hostels. As you have mentioned 9 to 10 , you could book a room for 10 with bunker beds and enjoy :)
IT is pretty cheap and gives you a lively environment as if in college. But minimum price will be 15 to 20 pounds per day per night. But hurry, you are going in a high peak time and if you dont book tickets early, you might end up selecting a costly hotel as cheap hotels might have got booked

go to: www.hotels.com
you may find something there, otherwise go to the train station in Basel and Bern, they have list of hotels, and call them from there, so you can found out availability and prices.
